The term “Swing Dance” is commonly used to refer to a group of dances developed in response to swing music, a genre of music developed in the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s. During this time Swing dancers were often called “Jitterbugs”.
“Swing Dancing” is used to refer generically to one or all of the following swing era dances: Lindy Hop, Charleston, Shag, Balboa and Blues. This group is often extended to include Jive, Rock and Roll, Western Swing, and other dances developing in the 1940s and later.
Swinging Jazz music features timing associated with African American and West African music and dance – a combination of crotchets and quavers which many swing dancers interpret as ‘triple steps’ and ‘steps’. Yet Swing Dancers have also introduced changes in the way these rhythms were played – a distinct delay or ‘relaxed’ approach to timing.
Many, if not most, of the swing dances listed above are popular forms of social dance. However, Swing Dancing can also be a highly competitive sport; with competitions being held internationally.
If you thought modern Jive was something you’d like to try, but thought it might be too hard, then Lola’s got the style for you.

During World War 2 American soldiers found that they could not dance the Jitterbug and other US based dance styles with the local French and European women, a need was created for something new and light hearted. From there Modern Jive was born, where easy steps and technique created a new style that could be enjoyed by all.
Since that time, Modern Jive has the versatility to express a range of emotions within the dance, which provides the freedom to express your own sense of style. Modern Jive is a dance style practised around the world under many other names. Ballroom Dancing refers collectively to a set of partner dances, which originated in the Western world and are now enjoyed both socially and competitively around the globe. Ballroom Dancing has a unique history which can be contributed to its popularity today, both recreationally and competitively. This form of dancing began in England during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, primarily among the “upper class” who regularly participated in private balls. Ballroom Dancing can be broken down into four main dances – The Waltz – Tango – Foxtrot – Quickstep.
During the late 19th century and early 20th century, Ballroom Dancing then became popular amongst the “middle / working class” where they would attend dances at public halls. However, it was during the 1920’s that Ballroom Dancing really started to boom, with competitions being held worldwide.
